The no-for-profit organization MettiamoSuBottega worked together with neighbours, public bodies and local organizations to set up a five-days-public festival - LABCITTA'- and to bring the attention to this small piece of abandoned land, located in Trani, Puglia Italy. Originally, it was supposed to be a public plaza for the neighbourhood, with greenery and playgrounds. According to the law N.1444 approved in 1968, in Italy when a new block of apartment is built, it is mandatory to provide at least 9sqm/inh of green space. This plot was supposed to be the green space of the neighbourhood, but it is just an hard grey swimmingpool.
The aim of the Festival was to make people aware of the potential of the space, in order to perceive it as a new resources for the area. It was also important to demonstrate that neither big money and big projects are needed to transform a space, but just the will. Through a previous work that involved volunteers of different local organizations and neighbours, it was realized a new temporary scenario for Piazza Gisotti:we designed playground court, we planted, we put together recycled urban furniture, we installed an info point: the Ruelotte, we played music, we projected movies.
After this five-days-Festival, everything went back to normal. Neighbours didn't claim back this plaza and public authorities didn't implement any project. Somebody may reasonably ask "Why so much effort?" Well, because we believe that is better to do things that to do nothing. If a project like this cannot be yet a long term option for the regeneration of this small plot, it doesn't mean that people don't learn anything from such experience. The educational/cultural aspect of this project is much more important then the real effect on the material space. We are talking about something that we cannot learn at school, that our society has forgotten: the value of community.
